Brand Crush | H&M Home

I don’t know if it is because Spring is on the way, but lately I have been drawn to mostly feminine, pastel homeware. I am conscious though that once Winter comes back around I am not going to want to have cutesy pastel shades all over my home, so I try to find accessories which don’t cost a lot; especially if I know they are something I am going to use for only part of the year. One store which does these kind of feminine touches at a really reasonable price is H&M home. Unfortunately we don’t have a H&M home near where I live (which is probably a blessing, as I’m sure my bank balance would take a large dent each month) but you can order direct from the website and if you are a H&M club member, delivery is free! It doesn’t cost anything to sign up, you just have to provide your email address and a few other details – definitely worth it, if you plan on making a few purchases. And to top it off they have a sale on until Sunday 25th March, where you can save between 10 – 15% off your order. So if you’re looking to get yourself a payday treat, H&M have got you covered. Here’s a look at what is currently on my wishlist…

H&M Wishlist - Olivett Interiors

  1. Stoneware plant pot in yellow
  2. Jacquard- weave bath mat
  3. Round mirror in gold
  4. Dalmatian print round plate
  5. Cotton velvet cushion cover in coral
  6. Metal wire basket in gold
  7. Metal candlestick in gold
  8. Dalmatian print mug

The Spring Edit | A Home Refresh

Finally spring is here… after months of cold drizzly weather, it’s finally starting to feel much brighter and warmer here in England, especially now the clocks have gone forward. I love the feeling that summer is on the way and that the days are longer, in fact It was the light nights and welcomed sunshine which started me thinking about how I can inject a bit of a spring into my home. I decided to put together a spring edit, for anyone else who is thinking along the same lines as me and are wanting to give their home a refresh this season.

Spring Home Update | The Olivett

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6 // 7 // 8

When I think of spring I automatically think of colour… blue skies, blossoming flowers and beaming sunshine. The season is all about those fabulous colours which start to come alive and brighten up the world around us. Colour is something I look for when picking new items for my home in spring time. However, me being me, i’m naturally drawn to the slightly muted colours, the soft pastels, which create a beautiful, romantic atmosphere. I’m not the biggest fan of bold primary colours within the home, don’t get me wrong I do like bold colours in moderation, it’s just I prefer softer shades, which can still make a statement. This is reflected in the items I chose for this spring edit and I think they are perfect for anyone who would love to add a spring-like, feminine touch to their home.

Let me know which is your favourite item in the comments below and don’t forget to follow me on Instagram for more interiors inspiration.

Where to Find Interior Inspiration

Where to Find Interior Inspiration | Olivett1. Unboxed –

If you are on the hunt for new furniture then has some gorgeous pieces. Their range is quite bespoke in comparison to the generic high street stores, so if you are looking for a focal piece for your room, I would highly recommend taking a look.

A particular section of the website which I only discovered a few months ago is the ‘unboxed’ section, where customers send images of the furniture they have brought, styled in their own homes. It is a fantastic way to see what others have done with a piece of furniture and can give you great ideas of how to style your own home.

2. Instagram

It’s no secret that I love Instagram – it’s my favourite social media app to use, and it is a place which I frequently turn to for inspiration.  I am not just talking about following specific interior accounts, some of my favourite accounts which are not solely focused on homes & interiors, are those that give me the inspiration that I need. It could be a cushion fabric in the background of someone’s snap or a picture of a coffee shop interior that my friend has posted, either way there are plenty of accounts out there that share gorgeous interiors and will help you find the look that you love.

Now that Instagram has now introduced the ‘save’ button, you can save a whole bunch of your favourite photos and only you can preview – perfect!. I like to use this function to create a mini-mood board of the interiors I come across, so that when it comes to decorating I have a good idea of the style and look I want each room to represent. Since using this new function it’s been easy to track which decorative styles I prefer, which is a great starting point if you are feeling lost as to what kind of ‘look’ you want a room to have. If I scroll through my saved photos it’s really apparent that I favour light & airy rooms, with hints of dark and somewhat moody colours such as navy and forest green. Gold and brushed brass are also two materials which pop up in almost all my saved photos, so I know they will definitely be making an appearance once we start decorating our new home.

I also love searching relevant hashtags to see what interior inspiration I can find. If you’re like me it is also a great way to have a little nosey at other people’s gorgeous homes. Here are some of my favourite hashtags which I use:

  • #victorianterrace
  • #myhomevibe
  • #myhomestyle
  • #interiorjourney
  • #interiorforyou

3. Pinterest

I know, I know it’s an obvious one, but if you really want to find some great inspiration for your home then Pinterest won’t disappoint. Plus when you come across an image you love, it is likely that it is linked to some great websites, whether that be retailers or blogs, so it is a fantastic way of finding even more sources to inspire you. I’ve often found myself landing on retailers sites which I have never heard of before and finding some stunning pieces of furniture or decorative pieces.

I’ve found that the more you use Pinterest, the better it is. As with most social media sites, it begins to learn what you like and dislike, so when you next login you are presented with images which are tailored to your tastes. Remember to save or pin the images you like though as otherwise it will have no way of knowing what you prefer.

Another way to ensure you are generating images suited to your wants is to use specific search term to narrow down your results. This is especially important as Pinterest has such a vast amount of images, so it is easy to become overwhelmed with the amount of content it generates. I’ve found this is the best way to generate relevant images, unless you are of course happy to browse without a specific agenda.

Like Instagram, you can also save images which only you can view. You can do this by using secret boards. They are great if you are in the middle of a project which you are yet to reveal or are undecided on a certain piece of furniture. If you change your mind next week and decide that the statement chair is too wacky, then who needs to know. It is something which you can delete from your private board like it never happened!

Pinterest also has a great function which you can share boards with your loved ones. Me and my boyfriend have one which we both pin interiors we like, so we can get an image of the sort of look we both enjoy before we begin decorating. In fact we have several boards, for different rooms, so we can plan the look of each room together. I’m very aware that I am lucky in the sense that me and my boyfriend have very similar tastes and that we are both interested in interior design, therefore this function works great for us to share or ideas! However if you and your other half have differing tastes and you think it might spark an argument, I’d stay well clear and perhaps stick to your own, perhaps secret, boards!

Their homes are beautiful and there are all kinds of interior bloggers out there with different styles to suit your own, it is just a matter of finding the ones you love. But in the meantime I will leave you with some of my favourites, for you to take a sneak peek at and hopefully add to your sources of beautiful interior inspiration…

The Hallway // A Little Inspiration

Radiator // Light Fixture // Farrow & Ball Paint // Hooks // Neom Candle // Parquet Flooring // Mirror

We haven’t even completed on our new home yet, but I’m already starting to think about how I would like to style the new rooms in our home. Someone send help! I know it’s a rookie mistake, as nothing is certain when buying a new home until you sign on the dotted line, but as a self-confessed interiors addict, I just can’t help myself!

I thought I’d start small and think about how I would like to style the hallway, it’s quite a dark place as the front door lets in a minimal amount of light into the space, so I want to keep it fairly light and airy with a pale colour on the walls, light coloured flooring and a mirror to bounce any light around the room.

I just love the look of cast iron radiators in period properties, especially in brushed brass finishes. Over time I plan on incorporating them into all the rooms in the house to add a sense of rustic charm. The parquet flooring is also something I have been lusting after recently, which I think adds some texture to what would otherwise be a fairly basic room. If you invest in a good quality finish it provides a robust canvas for all those feet which will inevitably walk across it, and arguably most importantly, I also think it offers such an inviting entrance.

Let me know what’s your favourite item and if there are any other details you would add to your hallway.

An Update on Our New Home

An Update on Our New Home | Olivett

I thought it was about time that I caught you all up on what is currently happening with the purchase of our new home. If you remember last year, we had found a modest maisonette close to the city centre, which we had an offer accepted on. As all first time buyers we were excited about the prospect of finally being able to purchase our first home. Especially as it is something I have wanted to do from such a young age; however we were very aware that having an offer accepted is far from getting your hands of the keys and moving yourself in. We went through all the normal motions of arranging a mortgage, legal paperwork and surveys etc, when the cracks started to begin to show. The report back from the surveyors highlighted some fundamental problems with the property and to cut a long story short, we were told that despite the property being advertised as a 2 bed flat, it was in fact only a 1 bed and there was an almost zero chance of us being able to do the work needed to be done, to ensure it is a 2 bed property. To add insult to injury the sellers decided to keep quiet about this for several months, knowing full well that they had not had the extra room signed off and in the end they decided to offer us an insurance policy to compensate. The policy essentially would pay out if we were ever challenged on the compliance with building regulations for the 2nd ‘bedroom’, and would supposedly pay out for any work needed to be done to rectify this. Well considering there was no chance of us being able to do said work, we laughed at the hilarious offer, accepted that this had been one of those life lessons, cut our losses and got out of there!

Fast forward about 8 months and this is when we can truly appreciate the saying that ‘everything happens for a reason’.  Things are looking a lot brighter for us, our financial situation has improved and we are now able to afford a much bigger and better property. We have in fact had an offer accepted on a new home, which we are incredibly hopeful will run a lot smoother this time, but again you never know!

Although I know anything can happen and it could quite easily go wrong again, I just can’t help myself thinking about how I would like to style the new space. I have been on Pinterest almost daily, thinking about colour schemes and decor, so assuming that everything goes well this time (cross your fingers for me) I think there will be a lot more interiors content here on the blog for you to browse through.

I hope you’re all having a wonderful Sunday, please don’t forget to follow me on Pinterest and Instagram for more interior inspiration!

DIY Personalised Christmas Baubles for Under £1

If you love getting crafty and making personalised items then this is the post for you. Creating these baubles has been on my to-do list for a few Christmases now – last year I made my friend’s little ones, some similar baubles, which I think make such a lovely gift for someone. Plus this is the easiest and cheapest DIY I think I’ve ever done, so even if you want to make them for yourself, it’s a great way to personalise your home for the festive season.

DIY Personalised Christmas Baubles for Under £1 | Olivett

What you will need…

  • Clear Bauble(s)
  • Permanent Markers
  • Ribbon
  • Feathers or other items to fill your bauble
  • Calligraphy font template

Now I’ve cheated a bit with this DIY as I managed to pick up these baubles from Wilko which were already ribboned up and were filled with these gorgeous feathers (can you believe they were only 75p each?). Last time I did this DIY I bought clear baubles with no filling and with no ribbon to hang them with, so I simply filled them with gold and blue star confetti and bought some thick royal blue ribbon to sew through the top, which was super easy and a perfect gift for my friend’s little boys!

DIY Christmas Baubles for Under £1 | Olivett

As my baubles were practically ready to go, all I needed to do was research a few calligraphy writing styles and choose what font I wanted to write our names in. I did this by typing calligraphy into Google and browsing through the different types of fonts until I found something I liked. I then practiced a few times on scrap paper, just to avoid making a mistake with the permanent marker, on the bauble itself…. and then I went for it!

DIY Christmas Baubles for Under £1 | Olivett

I wrote both mine and James’ names on the front in gold writing and it was as simple as that! They now take pride of place in our living room, to give our tiny flat some Christmassy vibes, as unfortunately it is too small for a Christmas tree! I can’t believe that this cost me under £1… and it is something which can be re-used year on year. If you want to you can choose different bauble ‘fillings’ to suit yours or your loved ones personality and taste – why not try some holly & berries, or perhaps some fake snow? Whatever you decide to fill them with, I think they just make such a thoughtful present which costs next to nothing – what’s not to like!

Please let me know if any of you try to re-create these DIY Christmas baubles, I would love to hear how you got on. Don’t for get to follow me on Bloglovin to make sure you never miss a post.

Why Navy is Your Home’s New Best Friend

Why Navy is Your Home's New Best Friend | Olivett

Up until a few years ago I never used to like the colour Navy. I used to think it was a boring colour and associate it with my old school uniforms. To be fair in all the 3 schools I went to, each of my uniforms were navy, so I guess you can forgive me for getting a little sick of it! However fast forward a few years and here I am wanting to shower my home accents of navy. Why you ask?…. Well although I didn’t quite appreciate as much in my school days, to me it is a colour of luxury. It instantly transforms your home into looking sophisticated and stylish, plus it’s the perfect accent colour during the autumn/winter months.

So if you’re like me and can appreciate how navy accents in your home can help it looking chic, then here are some of my top picks to add to your home.

How to Get Your Home Ready for Autumn

H&M Home Styling | Olivett Photo Credit: H&M Home

Each year that goes by I develop a stronger love for autumn and all that comes with it. It’s not just the beautiful orange hues of the leaves as I walk down the street or the excuse to wear cosy knits to my heart’s content, it is also the fact that I can dress my home top to bottom with candles and throws galore!

As the nights get darker and the days get shorter, we all tend to spend more time inside our homes, snuggled up watching our favourite TV shows or curled up reading a book. So I believe it is more important than ever to make sure we enjoy the space we create in our homes, since we will be spending so much time in it. This is why I decided to put together my tips & tricks on how to get your home ready for autumn, so that you look forward to spending time inside and enjoy your home even more, throughout the darker months.

How to get your home ready for autumn | Olivett

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 9

Create a Cosy Atmosphere

Candles are the perfect way to add that cosy feeling to your home. If, like me, you are not fortunate to have a fireplace which you can light now the nights are getting colder, then candles are a great alternative to provide you with a warm and peaceful atmosphere. This one from Next is packaged in a lovely warm brown glass holder, making it the perfect autumnal decoration for your home. It is also roasted chestnut scented, which will fill your home with a gorgeous festive smell – now if that’s not heaven, I don’t know what is! If you are looking for something more luxurious to splash out on then I would recommend looking at either The White Company or Jo Malone for some higher end alternatives. However if you are on a budget I know that Primark has a fantastic range of candles for next to nothing, they smell lovely and come in really lovely packaging for displaying in your home. Whatever your budget there are a great range of candles on the market these days, making it a great accessory for cosying up your home and leave it smelling heavenly.

Incorporate Texture

Adding texture to your home will create depth and, if done right, a sense of luxury. Throws are one of the easiest ways to add more texture, whilst doing a great job of keeping you nice and toasty. They’re the perfect addition to any night in, either spent alone or with your loved ones. This one from TK Maxx is beautiful, it was the gorgeous velvet material and deep teal colour, which attracted me to it. The velvet finish reflects the light, which will twinkle away once you’ve lit your favourite candle. When your throws are not in use, why not place them over the arm of your sofa or chair to accessorize your furniture.

Inject a Pop of Autumnal Colour

The easiest way I find to inject some colour into your home is by using flowers. They are especially great for creating a seasonal look as they are a temporary fixture for your home, which can be changed. If you’re looking for a more permanent option then why not try an accent piece of furniture like this chair? The colour is a lovely warm plumb shade, which will work perfectly throughout the autumn/winter months. Alternatively, when the warmer seasons come back around you can throw a bright, jazzy cushion onto it, in order to make it work with your home, all year round.

Use Low Level Lighting

Whether its the use of side lamps or placing a lantern in the corner of the room, using low level lighting is essential for creating an autumnal, cosy atmosphere. Why not try these retro-look side lamps with ombre shades. They will provide your home with the ideal amount of muted light, for a peaceful night in, whilst adding a touch of retro glamour to your home. Alternatively, if you prefer more traditional interiors a lantern could be the perfect option. This one from House of Fraser is a gorgeous accessory for any home. It’s copper finish with tinted glass, is ideal for creating some mood lighting, come the evening. Allowing you to get cosy and relax, whilst your favourite candle flickers away in the background, heaven!

I hope these tips were useful in helping you create the perfect autumnal home and that it gives you some inspiration as to how you can enjoy your inside space, come the dark nights. If you have any tips and tricks, please leave a comment below, i’d love to hear them.

Who to Follow on Instagram?

Olivett Instagram

Since i’m such an Instagram addict I thought I would share the love and let you all know which accounts I’ve been loving recently. When it comes to what I look for in an account that I want to follow, they obviously have to have good photography, but I also like to see an individuals personality shine through their pictures. They tend to be consistent in pushing out beautiful content, so I know there will be more to come in the future. Plus I’m a sucker for cute interiors or stunning outfit photos. These are some of the accounts I could scroll through for hours, all of which offer something slightly different, but keep me coming back for more.
